smooth sailing

A recent car convo...

Gage: Mommy, when I get older I'm going to live on a boat.

Mommy: That's interesting. Why do you want to live on a boat?

Gage: So I don't have to work! (as in, of course Mom, isn't that obvious??)

Mommy: Oh. Well, even if you live on a boat you'll probably still have to work.

Gage: Why? (shocked)

Mommy: Because that's how you get money.

Gage: How much money do you get?

Mommy: That depends on what kind of job you have. You'll probably want to pick a job where you get a lot of money.

Gage: No, because I don't really need that much money.

Mommy: No? Remember you need money to buy food and clothes and everything else.

Gage: I won't need to buy food, I'll just go to a restaurant. And I won't really need a lot clothes because I'll just be on my boat.

Mommy: Will you have a family? Because if you have a wife and kids you'll definitely need money to buy stuff for them.

Gage: Well, my wife will have her own money. (smart boy!)

Mommy: But what about your kids? You'll definitely need money to buy toys for them.

Gage: That's what Santa is for!!

I love this logic. And I was especially happy to hear this last part, since just a couple of weeks ago an older neighbor boy tried to convince Gage that there is no Santa!! We had a short conversation about it (during which I tried to say as little as possible) but he hadn't mentioned it since. So I'm hoping this means we're good for at least one more Christmas!

I like the world where Santa is real and money is unnecessary.
