Have you ever noticed that there is really nothing on television after 7:00 p.m. that is suitable for children? Prime time is NOT family time. But let's face it...there are only so many episodes of The Backyardigans and Team Umizoomi that an adult can watch. So when my five year old took an interest in American Idol at the beginning of this season, it seemed like the perfect opportunity for us to watch something together that we would actually both enjoy. I was really quite surprised, because Gage is not typically that interested in music, but something about the show kept him hooked week after week. In fact, by the middle of the season, he had memorized the names of each judge and contestant and was even starting to speak the American Idol lingo (when I asked him about one particular contestant's song, he replied that "it wasn't her best performance" but "she seemed connected to the song"!)
Although I had been a fan of the show in years past, I was less than impressed with the contestants this season, and I doubt I would have watched the entire season on my own. But I wasn't about to give up on something that afforded me an entire, uninterrupted hour of snuggling on the couch with my son every Tuesday night, no matter how bad the music or Ryan's lame jokes.

I can hardly wait for next season.
